What is the difference between information technology (IT) and information systems (IS)?

It is often observed that term information system and information technology are used interchangeably. Precisely, information technology (IT) is a subset of information systems (IS).

Information technology (IT) can be broadly defined as integration of computer with telecommunication equipment for storing, retrieving, manipulating and storage of data. Typically includes hardware, software, databases and networks.

Furthermore, according to Information Technology Association of America, information technology is defined as “the study, design, development, application, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems.”

(IT) professionals possess the right combination of knowledge and practical, hands-on expertise to take care of both an organization’s information technology infrastructure and the people who use it. They assume responsibility for selecting hardware and software products appropriate for an organization. They integrate those products with organizational needs and infrastructure, and install, customize and maintain those applications, thereby providing a secure and effective environment that supports the activities of the organization’s computer users.

On the other hand, Information systems (IS) consist of people, processes, machines and information technology designed to create, store, manipulate, distribute and disseminate information. Information system (IS) can be defined as set of coordinated network of components, which act together towards producing, distributing and or processing information.

(IS) professionals must understand both technical and organizational factors, and must be able to help an organization determine how information and technology-enabled business processes can provide a foundation for superior organizational performance.

Information technology (IT) has shown significant growth in the last decade, leading to more evolved information systems (IS) that have been also known as major form of decision making resource. However, with the advent of information systems (IS) that helped managed large amount of data into useful and valuable information, information technology (IT) has become more sophisticated.
